Do you ever stop to think about the root meaning of the words you use to describe your business? They hold the key to sustainable success, transformation and growth.
Think about it. The word corporation comes from the Latin corpus meaning body or body of people. And if we think of an organisation as a body of organs with each playing its part we get a picture of where the secret of resilience lies.
When all parts of the body are healthy, functioning properly and working in sync, then it performs. When one part has been ignored, we don’t understand vital connections or we prioritise appearance over deeper health, then things go wrong.
So in business, dealing with an isolated issue is like putting a sticking plaster over the problem. When we dive deeper into the organisation’s culture, we may discover the reasons why things aren’t working. We’re able to identify patterns, diagnose recurring problems and prescribe remedies.
Long-term change comes from examination, reworking and healing from within. The body is a composite machine of muscles, hormones, organs and a brain and in order for us to train and strengthen we have to respect the part each plays. Endurance and resilience to compete in a competition, for example, don’t happen by accident or overnight. It’s a journey.
The body also changes over time. We can’t stand still because age will catch up with us. So we evolve because what worked twenty years ago, won’t work now. In the same way, culture is a developmental journey.
Where are you on your journey and is it time to check in with the health of your business?
Drop me an email if you’d like to talk it over.
