Absolutely but here’s something to keep in mind.
When sailing through choppy waters it pays to have a focal point on the horizon.
From far away, a lighthouse will show up as a glow in the distance but as you get closer, it becomes a more defined, brighter light against the night sky. Using the navigational map, you can work out which lighthouse it is, how far away it is and the direction of your approach.
If visibility is low, you may hear a blast of the horn.
But you’re not safe yet. If you’re working your way in or out of port there will be an array of lights and navigation marks to keep you off the sandbanks and rocks. It’s only when you’re past the safewater mark that you know you’re OK.
What does this have to do with business growth?
We’ve had nothing but choppy waters for years. Now in an election year, things are still uncertain but as business owners, it is possible to sail through and thrive while we’re doing it.
How? In coaching terms, by keeping your Big Hairy Audacious Goal on the horizon. It’s the overarching destination that informs what you want to be doing in a year, five years, ten years and beyond. Your BHAG, as Jim Collins called it in his book “Built to Last”, must link to your purpose. Your purpose sets your intent, while your BHAG gives you a goal to work towards.
It may seem a little hazy and far off at first but as you navigate your way closer, it will become clearer and clearer. The tide may change, a storm may blow in and you may find yourself changing tack but it’ll be there on the rock, guiding you. It’s the way you know you’re on purpose.
Reassured you’re going in the right direction and missing the underwater (and overhead) hazards, you’ll stay on course – and your team will too.
And so, yes, you can grow a business in an election year, if you have the right guidance, vision and support.
Help is on hand
Of course, sometimes nautical charts will only get you so far. To map the most efficient course and avoid the hazards, a pilot will come on board to make sense of the information and share their local knowledge.
This is our job as coaches. To understand our clients, the obstacles they face and where they want to go.
So be brave, chart your course and set sail – and give Phil or Kerry a call if you could use a pilot on board with you.
