Welcome to mid-autumn. The trees are starting to let go of their leaves.
It makes me think, when something develops, it doesn’t just get bigger. It morphs as new structures and systems kick in to support the weight, height and function of the developing organism.
Think of a tree, a flower or a human child. As they get older, they don’t just change size, they change in their composition and shape too in sometimes obvious, sometimes subtle ways.
A growing business is no different. So if you’re eager to progress but you’re stressed, overwhelmed or even feeling resentful, then it’s time for change.
Like the trees, it’s time to let go so that you can develop and become stronger.
Just make sure you let go in the right way.
When no one is accountable, everyone is accountable, so the saying goes.
Rockefeller habit four is: ‘Every facet of the organisation has a person assigned with accountability for ensuring goals are met’.
What does this mean?
- Throughout the organisation, there should be one accountable person assigned to each function and process.
- It’s interesting to note that the difference between responsible and accountable is transparency so everyone in the organisation should know who this person is.
- Being accountable doesn’t mean you make all the decisions – misery-making micromanaging damages productivity and morale faster than anything.
- Relinquishing control takes a huge amount of trust so choose your team wisely – make sure they’re on the same page, know how to have constructive conflict and nurture relationships so everyone feels supported and heard.
How does this work in real life?
- Look at your business accountability chart. There should be one name against each of the key functions and processes.
- Each of those people should know their KPI (or key performance indicator) so that progress is measurable, feedback can be given and interventions developed to overcome problems.
These are the vital fibres that will hold your business together with strength and allow it to grow with flexibility.
Need help with any of this?
