When you’re looking to the future and have big ambitions to scale there is one thing you need to look at now: efficiency. Everyone’s mind will naturally go towards being careful with money and time at this point but what about your people?
What’s involved with making them more efficient?
There are many areas we could look at here but I’d like to focus on the fifth Rockefeller habit:
‘Ongoing employee input is collected to identify obstacles and opportunities.’
When this isn’t in place, we see:
- Frustration when there is no way to raise concerns, bottlenecks or issues with working practices in a systemised way.
- Even when they’re heard there could be cynicism or even resentment when no one seems to be responsible for enacting solutions and closing the loop.
- Fractions and divisions may develop as people try to protect their own corner.
Imagine the low levels of psychological safety this kind of culture creates and the barriers it puts up. How can your teams show up as their best selves and make their most creative decisions?
Even if you are committed to collecting information but not doing anything with it, employees will lose faith.
Imagine the time and energy you’ll free up for growth if your people:
- Are dealing with less drama.
- Feel listened to and valued.
- Have more fun and feel secure.
Where we gather, we grow
Verne Harnish, author of the Rockefeller Habits talks about the value of the daily huddle, ‘if you want to move faster, you need to pulse faster and communicate more frequently.’ There are other meeting rhythms that are essential for the healthy scaling of an organisation but he considers this one to be by far the most important.
It’s a direct way to access:
- What people are struggling with.
- The pulse of what’s going right, what’s stalling and where the issues are.
- An overview so you can highlight patterns before they become a problem.
- The interconnectedness of a team and their array of capabilities, skills, outside connections and experience.
- Incidental opportunities.
- The two-way street of accountability.
